Matthew Sinclair - Mentoring Programs
“The mentoring program is a great opportunity for students to learn about themselves and their peers. Everyone has had struggles and difficulties through their college career. As a mentor, helping students with those very same issues helps you build bonds with them while also rewarding you with personal growth. I am glad to be a student mentor and proud to know I will graduate with the amazing leadership skills I have developed as one.”

Hannah Andrews - ACE Program
“ACE was the driving force for everything that I did that led me to where I am now. Through my involvement with the program and on campus I was able to receive a competitive scholarship from the Department of Defense known as the SMART scholarship. My experiences and skills from the program carried on to the workforce. I am now the team lead for a new initiative that we are taking on, something that was accredited to my effective communication skills and leadership skills.”

Mats for the Homeless Project
The Mats for the Homeless Project began 2 years ago. It gives students the opportunity to earn service-learning hours, a requirement to graduate from FGCU. The students make “plarn”, which is plastic bag yarn. They recycle plastic bags from grocery stores that would otherwise take 500+ years to decompose and still end up in our waterways as microplastics. Other students crochet the plarn into a 3’ x 6’ mats. These mats are then donated to Lee County Homeless Coalition where they are distributed to those in need. To date, students have crocheted over 30 mats to be donated. Each mat requires 500 plastic bags! This project has successfully kept 15,000 bags from going back into our waste stream.
Communities in Transition
